This guide covers who qualifies for the free ETA, exactly how to apply, how long it takes, what to do if something goes wrong, and the visa-on-arrival fallback. No jargon, no outdated advice — just the current process as it works in 2026.

Do you need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Almost all visitors need either an ETA (applied for online before travel) or a visa on arrival — very few nationalities are fully exempt. The ETA is the standard route and the one we recommend: it's done before you fly, so you walk straight through immigration.
Check the official ETA site for your nationality before booking anything. Rules are stable in 2026, but your passport is the final authority.
The free ETA: 40 countries, zero fee since May 2026
Since 25 May 2026, citizens of 40 countries — including the United States, United Kingdom, EU member states, and India — pay no fee for the Sri Lanka ETA. This was a deliberate move to boost tourism after the record 2.36 million arrivals in 2025, and it makes Sri Lanka one of the cheapest premium destinations in Asia to enter.
If your country isn't on the free list, a standard ETA fee still applies — modest by global standards. Either way, apply through the official government ETA portal, not a third-party site that adds a markup.
How to apply for the Sri Lanka ETA, step by step
First, go to the official Sri Lanka ETA website (eta.gov.lk). Fill in your passport details, travel dates, and an address in Sri Lanka — your first hotel is fine. Submit, and if you're from one of the 40 free countries, there's no payment step. Then wait for the approval email, and carry a printout or screenshot when you travel.
Apply at least a few days before departure. The form is short and the whole thing genuinely takes minutes — the most common delay is people applying through unofficial copycat sites instead of the government portal.
How long does the ETA take?
For most applicants, approval arrives within minutes to a few hours. Officially, allow up to 24–72 hours, and don't leave it to the morning of your flight. If you haven't heard back within a couple of days, check your spam folder before panicking.
Once approved, the ETA is typically valid for 30 days from arrival. Keep your passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates — that's enforced at check-in and immigration alike.
Visa on arrival: the backup option
If you didn't get an ETA in advance, most nationalities can still get a visa on arrival at Colombo's Bandaranaike Airport. It works, but you'll queue, pay the standard fee, and start your holiday standing in a line.
Our advice: the ETA is free for 40 countries and takes minutes online. There's no good reason to rely on visa on arrival in 2026.
Indian citizens: what to know
Indian citizens are among the 40 nationalities covered by the free ETA since May 2026 — apply online before departure, pay nothing, and you're set. India is one of Sri Lanka's biggest visitor markets, and the process is smooth.
Carry your ETA approval with your passport. Immigration at Colombo is efficient when your paperwork is ready; it's the unprepared travellers who hold up the line.
If your plans change
ETAs are tied to your passport, not your exact flight — small date changes don't invalidate it. If you need to stay longer than 30 days, extensions are possible through the Department of Immigration in Colombo, but apply before your initial period expires.
Overstaying is fined and can cause real problems at departure. If your plans stretch, sort the extension early — it's straightforward when done in time.
