Four of Sri Lanka's greatest experiences in a single unforgettable day. You will climb the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock — a 5th-century fortress rising 200 metres from the jungle, with ancient frescoes, mirror walls and the famous lion paws — then explore the Dambulla Golden Cave Temple, the island's largest and best-preserved cave temple complex, glowing with centuries-old murals and Buddha statues. Standing atop the rock as the jungle stretches endlessly below is a moment you will never forget.
Between the ancient wonders you will wander an aromatic spice and herb garden to learn the secrets of Ayurveda, and finish the day at Pinnawala, getting close to magnificent elephants as they bathe and feed. It is a long day with a 3:30 a.m. start from the south coast, but everything is handled: transport, entrance fees, guide and water are all included. From $125 — this is the cultural day trip of a lifetime — comfortable transport and smart timing keep it relaxed all day, so book ahead.
