We are based on the south coast, so we know Weligama's breaks intimately — and we will be straight about when Arugam Bay is the better call.
In this guide
The Seasons: When Each Coast Works
Weligama: November to April. The south coast dry season brings clean, consistent swell and offshore winds. Arugam Bay: May to October. When the southwest monsoon hits the south, the east coast lights up. This is the same monsoon logic as whale watching — the island always has one coast in season. Traveling December–March? Weligama. June–September? Arugam Bay.
Weligama: The Beginner's Coast
Weligama Bay is a wide, sandy-bottomed bay with gentle, rolling waves — one of the best beginner surf spots in Asia. The sandy bottom means softer wipeouts, and the mellow beach break is forgiving while you learn to pop up and ride whitewater. Surf schools line the beach, and a lesson typically costs around USD 20–35 including board rental. Even intermediate surfers find fun: the reef breaks at either end of the bay (like Ram's) offer more punch when the swell is up.
Arugam Bay: The Experienced Surfer's Coast
Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's surf capital and a genuinely world-class destination for intermediate and advanced surfers. The famous point breaks — Main Point, Whiskey Point, Pottuvil Point — offer long, peeling right-handers over reef and sand. It is less forgiving than Weligama: reef bottoms, stronger currents, and lineups with experienced locals. Beginners can still learn here in the whitewater, but Weligama teaches faster and cheaper.
Lessons, Boards and Costs
Both coasts have abundant surf schools and board rental shops. In Weligama, group lessons run about USD 20–35 and private lessons a bit more; board rental is cheap and everywhere. Arugam Bay pricing is similar, though the scene skews slightly more toward independent surfers renting boards than first-timers taking lessons. In both places, bargain politely for multi-day rental.
Vibe: Laid-Back Bay vs Surf Town
Weligama is a working fishing town with a surf scene layered on top — low-key, local, great seafood, and the stilt fishermen at nearby Ahangama. Arugam Bay is a purpose-built surf town: beach bars, international crowd, parties in season, and a wilder, more remote feel on the east coast. Weligama suits families and couples mixing surf with sightseeing; Arugam Bay suits surf-focused trips and nightlife.
Which Coast for Your Trip?
Beginner traveling Nov–Apr → Weligama. Beginner traveling May–Oct → take lessons on the east coast (Arugam Bay whitewater) or reconsider your dates. Intermediate/advanced Nov–Apr → Weligama's reef breaks plus nearby Mirissa and Hiriketiya. Intermediate/advanced May–Oct → Arugam Bay, no question. Non-surfers in the group? Weligama wins for mixed groups — the south coast has far more non-surf sightseeing (Galle Fort, whales, safaris) within easy reach.
