Sail into the Indian Ocean from Mirissa — one of the best places on Earth to see blue whales, the largest animals ever to have lived. With a 5:15 a.m. pickup from Unawatuna and a certified, fully-insured crew, you will cruise into deep southern waters as the sun rises, scanning for blue whales, sperm whales and playful pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins leaping beside the boat. There is nothing on Earth quite like the moment a blue whale surfaces beside your boat.
This half-day ocean safari includes a light breakfast with fresh fruit served on board, complimentary water, sea-sickness tablets, life jackets, passenger insurance and an English or Russian-speaking guide. Whale season runs November to April, when sightings are at their best. From $65 — an absolute must-do on your Sri Lanka holiday — and boats are never overcrowded, so everyone gets a clear view. The season runs from November to April, when blue whales migrate through the waters off Mirissa and sea conditions are calmest. Outside these months sightings drop sharply, so plan accordingly.
Sea-sickness tablets are provided on board and the crew will advise you to take one before departure. If you are prone to motion sickness, bring your own preferred remedy and a light windbreaker — it can be breezy on the water.
Whales are wild animals and sightings can never be 100% guaranteed, but Mirissa has one of the highest success rates in the world during season, and dolphin pods are spotted on the vast majority of trips.
The excursion is rated moderate and suits children who are comfortable on boats for a few hours. Very young children or nervous sailors may prefer our land-based tours — just ask us for honest advice.
